CRUMBS OF DEMOCRACY AND SOCIAL DEMOCRACY

Nowadays are unstable, and this reminds us that the stability of the world is something we must build day by day, in our everyday lives. Many times we feel disappointed with the world as it is, but in certain moments—small moments—the opportunity to be grateful for existence, for being alive here, is an opportunity that must be embraced. In any case, my intuition tells me that we are improving. For this reason, at this moment, I am optimistic. The values emerging from the depths and being debated in many regions concern how to make Social Democracy a reality.

At this point, Social Democracy seems to be a good means to serve as a counterbalance to the bare Democracies that dominated the form of Government in many States not too long ago—just a few years back. Social Democracy is conceived as a middle-ground Democracy, where collective interest plays a central role in various relations. This is because, in recent years, this effect has demanded our full attention to social behavior. After all, in a Democracy without safeguards, polarizations become extreme at the time of the final choice, and it is always necessary to unite the Nation toward a single destiny, even while many oppose the situation, forming an opposition to the Government—which, in my humble opinion, does not make much sense. Thus, a Bad Government is better than No Government. However, this does not mean we should only have Bad Governments; some Governments are excellent on this planet, though they are the minority.

Therefore, it is necessary to think of Social Democracy without the dark scourge of governmental failures, conditioning the Culture of each State to a State of Hope, where Human Beings can expect greater guarantees of Rights, whatever their nature may be. There is no way to have Dignity in the State we currently find ourselves in, due to many conditions that have not yet been resolved by the UN. Thus, International Law is affected by its ambiguities. For this reason, to conclude, I would like to express my optimism regarding what is being prepared these days in the world: the debate around Democracy and how to make it more Social, without extending the matter to a Socialist Regime which, to this day, has not proven to be better than Democracy, but rather points to a sui generis condition that establishes counterbalances at the moment of elections, even.
